Figurative Painting in Oil on Panel
Lavender studied and practices the oil-on-panel techniques that were in use from the Renaissance through the 19th century, many of them originally developed by Leonardo da Vinci and shared with his apprentices in his Treatise on Painting. Among these techniques is the application of many thin, transparent layers, called “glazing,” which creates a luminous effect as light bounces from the painting’s white ground through the paint layers, then to the viewer’s eye.

In some ways, animal subjects incite more empathy in viewers than do images of the human figure. This may be because of the cultural loading brought to representations of the human figure, such as signifiers of gender, time (when?), or place (where ?).
